Educator and Writer Zerbeliz Esra Avgöre said, “There is a serious difference between the reading rates between Turkey and the world countries, which is not in our favor. So much so that, according to UNESCO’s 2017 data, Turkey ranks 86th in the world in terms of reading. There are also underdeveloped African countries in the same category with us.
According to TUIK data, the book ranks 235th in our general need list in Turkey. While the average money spent per person for books in the world is 1.3 dollars, it is 0.25 dollars in Turkey. While 1 person in Japan reads 25 books a year, this rate is very tragic in Turkey: 6 people read 1 book a year. The countries that read the most books are France and England with 21 percent. Japan comes next with 14%. This rate is 12 percent in the USA, while it is 9% in Spain and one in a thousand in Turkey.
The numbers tell us we’re doing something wrong with the reading habit. Why can’t we get our people into the habit of reading? What can we do about it?” he said.
PARENTS SHOULD LEARN
Educator and Writer Zerbeliz Esra Avgören, “There are books, periodicals, etc. for children to read into their hands. Before giving materials, we should listen to the following habits they have acquired before: Character structures, language development, needs, reading purposes, meaning they attribute to reading. In summary, we should get to know our child and the material to be read. Learning to read is a much shorter process than turning reading into a habit. Reading habit education is a long and slow process. Like all habits, it is digested over time, but when it progresses with the right calendar, it becomes permanent.
DETERMINING THE PURPOSE OF READING IS IMPORTANT
Educator and Writer Zerbeliz Esra Avgören, “What is the Purpose of Reading? It is one of the most important questions to be asked. The child, who does not determine what he is reading for, is unconsciously blown away like leaves in the wind. Materials such as textbooks are approached for learning purposes. Books or periodicals are read for the purpose of understanding or learning.
We can categorize our reasons for reading and turning it into a reading habit as follows:
1-Reading to Learn
The biggest mistake is to think that learning is memorization. Learning is changing behavior. There are countless data in the world. In order to choose among them, we have to know what we want to know. The concept of “learning to learn” is constantly talked about. Learning to learn is knowing what you want to know. Before we learn knowledge by reading a book, we must learn to read a book!
Reading habits should also be viewed from this perspective. Everyone talks about the beauty of the habit of reading, but no one teaches how to acquire this habit! Because we have not succeeded in transforming it into practice and behavior. In other words, we, as a society, did not learn to read books. We just memorized the slogans: “The book must be read.”
2-Reading to Understand
Understanding, literally, can be explained as “to grasp what a word, a word, a symbol, an event, phenomenon or behavior means, what it shows” or “to reach a conclusion by combining new information with old ones, to make a kind of inference”.
Aim; Since it is not aimed at learning word-for-word, worrying about forgetting and obsessing over the text with intense energy adversely affect reading in this area. The goal should be to understand, to feel.
Each individual can make different inferences from the same text. This does not mean that the text is not understood. On the contrary, the child internalized the subject and reached different inferences with comparisons.
3-Reading for Fun
When we read for fun, humor books and magazines may come to our mind first. But we must take a broader view. Sometimes we can look at academic texts as entertainment. While reading a lyric poem, the emotional intensity that the reader feels can entertain him, and the aim can be to have fun for children who want to read books that parents or teachers consider useless.
Since having fun is a need in the routine of life, this feeling must be satisfied in the materials of books and periodicals. It would be a great mistake to sanctify the book and make it not entertaining.
4-Reading Because We’re Curious
What are we curious about, what are we interested in? Especially in children, it is necessary not to miss this sparkle. You saw a spider walking on the road with your child, and he asked a question about spiders. This is the opportunity, take advantage of the moment.
Access the information you want about spiders from search engines by going to the internet right away. If he can read, give him control and ask him to read aloud to you, if he doesn’t, read it for him. If he’s still interested, get a book on spiders that’s appropriate for his age group.
5-Reading for Relaxation
Sometimes we read to relieve the tiredness of the day, the week and sometimes the years. For the same purpose, when choosing books for children, books with a simpler language of expression and calming descriptions can be chosen instead of works with mixed fiction, which will increase mental activity, with multiple characters, which require intense ties between cause and effect relationships, and which have fictional games.
6-Reading for Popularity
We can consider “reading for popularity” from two different angles: Following popular books and reading those kinds of books to be popular. If the elements that are accepted and expressed by the society will be the reason for preference, it will be the most innocent way to choose it as a book.
7-Reading to Socialize
First of all, we should include reading materials in our lives. We can create book reading and evaluation clubs. Even if you are doing this in small groups within the family, carrying it to the general increases the efficiency.
Of course, you may have expectations from teachers, but you should start first.
8-Reading to Recognize
When we go to a place we do not know, we read materials such as guides and maps to get to know the region. We read travel articles before we go. We read their biographies to get to know the social figures better. We read the user manual in order to get to know a new device.
All of these are included in the reading. While doing these readings, they do not think that what they can do by reading is limited if we involve our children in the event and perform the act of reading together.
9-Reading for Harmony
Teachers in the classroom, “We are starting the reading time!” When he says that, what children do is to take out their book and read in order to fully adapt.
This will have positive effects on reading habits when generalized to environments such as family and friend groups, not in the classroom environment.
For this reason, it is not surprising that the reading habits of the new generations in societies where the habit of reading exists, also develops easily. Children who read books with their parents and siblings will get more flavor in the harmony of the family.
