ECDC’s updated risk assessment report included the expectation that the variant will spread very quickly in European countries in the next few months.

The report emphasized that Delta continues to be the dominant variant at the moment, but it is highly likely that Omicron will become dominant in Europe within the first two months of next year.

ECDC Director Andrea Ammon said they saw “very high” the possibility that Omicron could spread rapidly.

“It is considered very likely that Omicron will increase the number of deaths and hospitalizations in addition to previous predictions that took into account the Delta variant,” Ammon said.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the Omicron variant has been detected in 77 countries around the world, but this number is much higher.

In many European countries, epidemic measures were increased after the detection of the Omicron variant at the end of November.
