Prominent ear is a psychological problem: Is there a solution?

While the problems related to the nose usually start to develop after adolescence, the prominent ear problem is seen from the age of the patient, the early childhood period when the mind starts to fade, that is, from the age of 4-5. In the cases we have seen, the biggest reason for resorting to this aesthetic is the psychological pressure of the environment. Especially a child who is of school age and has prominent ear problems complains that his friends at school make fun of his situation. Unfortunately, peer bullying seen from friends in this regard in early age children, and even the inability to cope with this behavioral pressure and mobbing from close relatives leads to permanent psychological problems in the child. In such cases, it is a correct option to offer psychological support to the patient before planning surgery.

THEY APPLY SO THAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE NOT LIKE THEIR OWN

Another reason why the patient’s age has decreased so much in ear aesthetics is that parents realize that their babies/children have prominent ear problems and want to solve this problem before they even reach school age and are not exposed to these environmental pressures. In fact, some adult prominent ear surgery patients apply to us at a very early age with the thought that their children will not experience the problems they have experienced when they have a baby.

NOT RECOMMENDED BEFORE 6 YEARS OLD

Although prominent ear surgery is made practical and comfortable with the modern methods of today’s medicine, general or local anesthesia with an operation that takes as little as 1-2 hours, we do not recommend this surgery to children before the age of 6 years.

Another psychological problem is experienced by people who have had prominent ear surgery in the past and whose ears have been restored on one or both sides.

CAN THERE BE OPENING AFTER PROPHET EAR SURGERY?

There is a possibility of some opening after prominent ear aesthetics. However, if the technique used is a technique that permanently changes the cartilage structure, such as shaping the outer eardrum, and if a surgical technique is used instead of hanging with a rope, the probability of reopening is also very low.

SMALL DIFFERENCES MAY BE VISIBLE BETWEEN SURGERY EAR

Psychological trauma in prominent ear aesthetic patients may continue even after surgery. This time, obsessions such as examining the ears that are constantly operated and testing their symmetry may arise. In such cases, it is important to first present realistic expectations to patients about how much symmetry can be achieved. Of course, the surgeon’s wish is the same as his patient; symmetrical and smooth ears… However, as in all paired organs, there may be millimetric differences between the operated ears.

In this case, the suggestion that should be given to the patient will be to focus on the whole. In other words, instead of looking at which ear is millimeter ahead and which is millimeter behind, it is recommended to notice the changes such as the beauty reflected on the face after the surgery, to take on a more mature facial expression from a childish state, to have a calmer and more positive gaze from a more nervous and tense gaze, and to feel happy.
