The self-destructing work of British street artist Banksy has sold for a record price at auction.

“Love is in the Bin” is on sale by Sotheby’s in London, with a pre-sale estimate of between £4m and £6m (4.7m to 7.1m).

But Thursday’s selling price was three times the high estimate of around £18.5m (€21.8m), a record for the artist.

The artwork consists of a half-broken canvas in an ornate frame featuring a spray-painted image of a girl reaching for a red heart-shaped balloon.

It last went on sale at Sotheby’s three years ago in October 2018 under a different name, “Girl with Balloons”.

As an unidentified European buyer submitted the winning bid, a hidden shredder that Banksy had embedded in the frame came to life and hung half of the canvas in strips from the frame.

Sotheby’s described the work he created at the exhibition as “the ultimate Banksy work of art”.

“Girl with a Balloon” was originally stenciled on a wall in East London and has been reproduced endlessly to become one of Banksy’s best-known images.

In March, a Banksy mural honoring Britain’s healthcare workers was first painted on a hospital wall and sold for £16.8 million (€19.8 million) at Christie’s.
