French police said they shot and injured a man who had threatened them with a knife at a Paris train station.

The suspect was “seriously injured” by two railway security officers in Gare Saint-Lazare on Monday evening, the police said.

The man took a knife out of his pocket and ran towards officials shouting “Allah Akbar,” said a police source that confirmed media reports.

“The two officers used their service weapons to defend themselves and to neutralize him,” said the SNCF’s railway press service.

The injured person was being taken care of by emergency services, they added.

French prosecutors say they have opened a criminal investigation into “attempted murder of public service official, apologizing for terrorism and gun violence”.

The man was “not known to the secret services,” according to an investigation source quoted by the AFP news agency.
