Apple unveiled new MacBook computers with Apple processors and an updated model of its popular AirPods in a one-hour virtual event on Monday.

Last year Apple introduced a new line of computers with Apple processors with the assistance of a manufacturing partner, breaking its dependence on chip maker Intel. The company said at the time that the new chip, called the M1, would make Apple devices faster and more energy efficient.

The new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors power a new MacBook Pro, which is available in 14-inch and 16-inch models starting at $ 2,000 and $ 2,500, respectively. The updated computers will have faster processing speeds, better graphics, improved audio quality, and better cameras, the company said.

Apple has also rolled back some of the changes it has made to its laptops over the years, bowing to consumer demand by adding the unpopular Touch Bar, a touchscreen strip above the keyboard, and again connectors for an HDMI cable and an SD memory card.

Apple also released a third generation AirPods with better audio quality and longer battery life for $ 179 – a $ 20 increase over the second iteration of the product – along with a new Apple Music subscription.

Apple computers helped make the company a famous brand, but the Mac line – luxury devices that typically cost over $ 900 – has always been a small fish in the PC market. In the past quarter, Apple computers made up 7.4 percent of the global PC market, far behind Lenovo, HP and Dell, which, according to research company IDC, accounted for more than 60 percent of sales.

Apple’s AirPods have enjoyed huge popularity since their debut in 2016. The wireless earphones are the top sellers among the “hearables”, wireless earphones with sensors that communicate with telephones. This year, according to a report by Counterpoint Research, AirPods accounted for 57 percent of the market for high-end hearables, well ahead of Samsung with 17 percent.

Apple’s announcement on Monday came just over a month after the tech giant unveiled a new line of iPhones – the iPhone 13 series – an updated Apple Watch and a new iPad.

Hardware announcements aside, the company has seen mounting turmoil in recent months, including increased calls for regulation. Apple recently appealed a court ruling accusing Epic Games of monopoly behavior in its lawsuit against Epic Games, and last week sacked a leader of the #AppleToo movement, a group of workers activists.
