A bomb targeted the entrance of a mosque in the Afghan capital Sunday, claiming “a number of civilians,” a Taliban spokesman said.

The bomb targeted the Eidgah Mosque in Kabul, where a memorial service was being held for the mother of Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

The bomb exploded near the entrance to the mosque, the city’s second largest, according to the spokesman.

An Interior Ministry spokesman, Qari Sayed Khosti, meanwhile told AFP news agency that at least two civilians were killed and three injured.

The Taliban announced Saturday that prayers would be held Sunday afternoon at the mosque for Mujahid’s mother.

Ahmadullah, a shopkeeper whose business is near the mosque, told the AFP news agency he heard “the sound of an explosion followed by gunfire.” He added that just before the explosion, the Taliban had closed the street for the prayer ceremony.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in mid-August, attacks against them by militants from the IS group have increased. The increase has raised the possibility of a major conflict between the two extremist groups.

At least 72 Afghan civilians and 13 U.S. soldiers were killed and more than 150 people were injured in a bombing at Kabul airport in late August. A branch of IS known as IS-K said it carried it out.

IS maintains a strong presence in eastern Nangarhar province and considers the Taliban an enemy. It has claimed several attacks against them, including several killings in the provincial capital of Jalalabad. Attacks in Kabul have been rare.
